Methods of Identification

It is very difficult to identify created moissanite from a diamond. Most jewelers use a diamond tester that uses the thermal process. This tester can detects all other colorless stones with the exception moissanite. Moissanite and diamond are the only two stones that will test positive on a thermal process tester. Jewelers first test the stone on a diamond tester if the stone test positive the jeweler knows that it could only be a diamond or moissanite. Then the stone is tested on a moissanite tester, we know that it could only be either a diamond or moissanite, now we can distinguish if it is a diamond or moissanite. This is the best way to identify if a moissanite stone.

Put a moissanite and a diamond in a liquid with a specific gravity of 3.21. The moissanite stone will float and the diamond will sink.

Moissanite / Diamond tester as described above.

Moissanite is double refractive and a diamond is single refractive.

Looking over the stone with 10x magnification to determine if single or double refractive.

Under 10x magnification moissanite will show needle like inclusions.
